Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities
Abstract
The ICC/ANSI A117.1 provides details, dimensions, and specifications to help building designers develop their plans so that the facility will offer unobstructed entry and ease of use to all users with disabilities.
It identifies technical requirements for two kinds of accessible units: fully-accessible Type "A" units; and Type "B" units that comply with HUD's Accessibility Guidelines.
While ANSI A117.1 covers the technical requirements for accessibility, it is incomplete without accompanying "scoping" provisions. These provisions indicate when the technical provisions apply and are contained in the International Building Code (IBC).
Notes
Claudia's Notes:
When it comes to making buildings accessible to all people, no matter what their mobility issues, we have ICC/ANSI A117.1 to thank for setting the standards used throughout the United States. It's hard to believe, but the standard has been around since 1961 and covers both new and existing facilities.
The next update of the standard should come in 2014, as the document is on a five-year revision cycle.
